A calculator shows what you'll owe. A plan shows how to owe less. Let's build yours.
How this calculator works
- Adjusted gross income (AGI). We start with your income, then subtract pre-tax 401(k) and payroll deductions, the deductible part of any IRA contribution, and half of any self-employment tax.
- Taxable income. From AGI we subtract the larger of your standard or itemized deductions, plus the new senior deduction (65+) and, for 2026, the charitable deduction for non-itemizers.
- Federal tax. Ordinary income runs through the brackets for your filing status. Long-term gains and qualified dividends stack on top at 0%, 15%, or 20%, and the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax applies above the thresholds.
- Credits. The Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents reduce your tax, with the refundable portion included.
- Payroll & state. FICA (Social Security and Medicare, including the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax) and your state's income tax are calculated on the income each one taxes. State tax uses your state's 2026 brackets, standard deduction, and personal exemptions or credits.
Your marginal rate is the federal tax on your next dollar of income, including credit and deduction phase-outs. Your effective rate is your total federal income tax divided by your total income.

What this calculator doesn't include: the Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction, Alternative Minimum Tax, the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Saver's Credit, education and child-care credits, the new deductions for tips, overtime, and car-loan interest, state-specific credits, phase-outs and recapture provisions, and income a state may exempt (such as Social Security or retirement income). State tax is estimated from federal AGI using each state's 2026 brackets (single brackets for head-of-household and separate filers). For married couples, 401(k), IRA, and self-employment entries are treated as household totals, and IRA deductibility assumes the contributing spouse's workplace-plan coverage as checked above.
